Good morning…
We are invited into real relationship with a compassionate Creator who is actively at work in our everyday lives. How much of this living, loving God do we tap into on a daily basis, when we are tired or lonely, when we are making important decisions for ourselves and our loved ones, when there are so many hungry, hurting needs in the world where we live? God offers us priceless power, palpable peace, and personal purpose, yet sometimes we limit ourselves to just $3 worth of God, as this outdated yet convicting poem exposes.
Three Dollars Worth of God by Wilbur Rees
I would like to buy $3 worth of God, please.
Not enough to explode my soul or disturb my sleep,
but just enough to equal a cup of warm milk
or a snooze in the sunshine.
I don’t want enough of God to make me love a black man
or pick beets with a migrant.
I want ecstasy, not transformation.
I want warmth of the womb, not a new birth.
I want a pound of the Eternal in a paper sack.
I would like to buy $3 worth of God, please.
Do we want just enough God to keep in tact our own comfort and complacency? What might we do, say, be if we invited the LORD to fully take us over? Are we willing to surrender our whole selves to a God who may explode our soul and disturb our sleep, inspire us to work side by side in love with all people and birth us into Eternal transformation each and every day?
For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him, 2 Chronicles 16:9 (NIV),
Sue
