Good morning…
I bend my own 4:00 am rule and begin brewing my morning coffee at 2:40 today. “It’s Mother’s Day,” I figure, “and my gift to myself will be an afternoon nap.” I love savoring these quiet, creative hours in the middle of the night, when God invites me close.
At 7:30 am, I will walk to and from the horse farm with a friend whose husband died from cancer about sixteen months ago. She is an amazing mom to her grown children, who are each thriving in different states, and it will be fun to begin our Mother’s Day with a meaningful walk and talk. After church, my Mother’s Day lunch will be spent at Willy’s Mexican Grill, our family’s Sunday ritual, then the kids will rush to their rooms to prepare for year end tests, papers, and projects. My Mother’s Day dinner will be shared with the families of our daughter’s high school lacrosse team, as we celebrate an amazing season of lasting memories. Before day’s end, I will call my mother, like many of you will do, and I will give thanks for the gifts my mom shares with so many.
I think of my friends across the country whose beloved moms or dads, spouses or children will celebrate this holiday in heaven, separated by sight but bonded in between. I think of the many people not blessed by a mother who loved with the love of God, people raised by moms who poisoned the privileged relationship with unresolved hurts of their own. For all those missing a loving mother this morning, I pray that the love of our divine Daddy bridges the gap between earth and heaven. May the bridge that only God can build be sturdy and well traveled by our hearts today, this day and every day.
…if there is any fellowship [that we share] in the Spirit, if [there is] any [great depth of] affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, having the same love [toward one another], knit together in Spirit, intent on one purpose [and living a life that reflects your faith and spreads the gospel… Philippians 2:1b-2a (AMP).
Being knit together in Spirit describes Mother’s Day God’s way, on earth as it is in heaven,
