Good morning…

Last week, my “solidarity headache” (see my 3.1.16 post, “I have a headache.”) morphed into an ear ache and sore throat, then a cough and chest congestion, before I had the full blown virus so many have been battling this season. At the height of my cruddy sickness, I was reminded of a scary childhood memory.

As a child growing up in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio, when I was sick with a “head cold” it often included waking up with my eyes glued shut from crusty mucus forming on my eye lashes as I slept. I remember being terrified the first time this happened, calling out for my mom’s help since I could not open my eyes. Calmly, she got a wash cloth and held it under hot tap water before gently rubbing it across my caked eye lids, loosening nature’s hardened seal of congestion.

I had a similar experience last week, waking one morning with my right eye lid sealed completely shut. Fortunately, I did not panic. I had been here before, stuck with closed eyes. I am grateful to have had a mother who tenderly taught me how to loosen nature’s clogged grip so that I could see once again with wide eyed wonder.

Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions, Psalm 119:18 (NLT),
