Good morning…

Releasing our “secondary loves” into the care of Our First Love, we are silently drawn into unity with the God who created us. I recently read a short story describing creatively the process of us melting into our true, salty self.

The Salt Doll by Anthony de Mello (1931-1987)

A salt doll journeyed for thousands of miles over land, until it finally came to the sea. It was fascinated by this strange moving mass, quite unlike anything it had ever seen before.

“Who are you?” said the salt doll to the sea.

The sea smilingly replied, “Come in and see.”

So the doll waded in. The farther it walked into the sea the more it dissolved, until there was only very little of it left. Before that last bit dissolved, the doll exclaimed in wonder, “Now I know what I am!”

As we wade into the presence of Our First Love, our defenses dissolve and we spaciously expand into our true, salty self. Jesus explains why we melt into more: “Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness?” (Matthew 5:13a, MSG).
