Good morning…

At Tuesday’s memorial service, two dearly loved daughters stepped up to the microphone. One recounted a string of incredible memories of a passionate dad who held nothing back, loving freely and fully, each day of his life. The other daughter read aloud the following poem, allowing us all to feel the power of deep love living on.

Let Me Go by Christina Rossetti

When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom filled room
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little, but not for long
And not with your head bowed low
Remember the love that once we shared
Miss me, but let me go.
For this is a journey we all must take
And each must go alone.
It’s all part of the master plan
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick at heart
Go to the friends we know.
Laugh at all the things we used to do
Miss me, but let me go.

How do we let go of a person we will miss so? “Go to the friends we know and laugh at all the things we used to do.” Might these be the first steps of making our way through grief’s messy mixture of emotions?

“God will make a way when there seems to be no way,” old familiar song lyrics well up from my brain. “God works in ways we cannot see. God will make a way for me. He will be my guide, He’ll hold me closely to His side. With love and strength for each new day, God will make a way. He will make a way.”

And you saw how the Lord your God cared for you all along the way as you traveled through the wilderness, just as a father cares for his child. Now he has brought you to this place (Deuteronomy 1:31, NLT).

P.S. In this place, at this very moment, I invite you to take a sacred minute to listen to this poem read aloud.
