Good morning…

At 1:23 am this morning, I received the monthly devotional newsletter sent from Jan Johnson, a California professor who taught our spiritual direction training program at Ignatius House Retreat Center here in Atlanta, the author of a beloved book we later studied as a class in our living room, When The Soul Listens.

One image Jan shares in her newsletter continues to capture my attention.

When your own soul listens to this photo, what do you sense God trying to say to you? Really, take 25 to 30 seconds to install in your brain the personalized truth resonating within you. If you feel drawn to do so, write out what Jesus might be saying to you now.

To conclude her newsletter, Jan expands upon God’s encouragement in Zephaniah 3:17.

The Lord your God is with you . . . even when you make mistakes.

He is mighty to save (deliver, make whole) . . . even and especially when you fail.

He will take great delight in you . . . even when you can’t stand yourself.

He will quiet you with his love . . . even when everything inside you is screaming or numb.

He will rejoice over you with singing . . . even when your world is falling apart.

How do these words jive with God’s message inspired by the above image? Which line speaks most to where you are right now? Why might God want to whisper this tender truth to you today?
