Good morning…
I will remember last night’s gorgeous wedding because of the white umbrellas passed out in the rain, my husband’s heartfelt message to the bride and groom, a chance to talk and dance with incredible people, and the reading of a Mark Twain poem I had never heard before.
A marriage makes of two fractional lives a whole;
It gives two purposeless lives a work,
And doubles the strength of each to perform it.
It gives to two questioning natures a reason for living
And something to live for.
It will give new gladness to the sunshine,
A new fragrance to the flowers, a new beauty to the earth
And a new mystery to life.
–Mark Twain
Our fractional lives yearn for wholeness. Our purposelessness craves a life work. Our questioning natures seek something to live for.
Now the Lord God said, “It is not good (beneficial) for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper [one who balances him—a counterpart who is] suitable and complementary for him” (Genesis 2:18, AMP).
So God instituted the sacred bond of marriage.
New doubled strength.
New fragrant gladness.
New beauty and mystery enhancing life.
Two people are better than one. They can help each other in everything they do (Ecclesiastes 4:9, NIRV).
