Good morning…

“God is present with me this day,” I read aloud one of my favorite Howard Thurman passages found in Meditations of the Heart. “God is present with me in the midst of my anxieties. . . . Little by little, I am beginning to understand that deliverance from anxiety means a fundamental growth in spiritual character and awareness. It becomes a quality of being, emerging from deep within, giving to all the dimensions of experience a vast immunity against being anxious. A ground of calm underlies experiences whatever may be the tempestuous character of events. This calm is the manifestation in life of the active, dynamic presence of God.”

“I seek new levels of awareness of the meaning of the commonplace,” writes Thurman. “It is easy for me to take things for granted and to deal with them without sensitiveness. When have you noticed the color of the sky? When have you looked at the shape and place of a tree? What about the light in the eyes of your friend when she smiles? There’s magic all around us. In the rocks and trees, and in the minds of humans. Deep hidden springs of magic.”

On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and shouted, “If you are thirsty, come to me and drink! Have faith in me, and you will have life-giving water flowing from deep inside you, just as the Scriptures say” (John 7:37-38, CEV).

I am beginning to understand that deliverance from anxiety requires our thirsty faith. Deep hidden springs of magic flow from within as we gulp down the active, dynamic presence of God.

Lord, please heighten our sensitiveness to you. May we see, hear, taste, touch, and smell your magic all around us.
