How Is My Mom?

Good morning…

Yesterday was a very long day.

7:00 am: I spoke by phone with my mom, my dad, and my sister in the hospital waiting room. As mom was wheeled back for her five to six hour surgery, “We love you,” filled her ears, her mind, and her heart.

12:15 pm, my dad’s first text came: “She went into surgery at 9:06 and hasn’t gone to the recovery room yet.”

3:06 pm, six hours into surgery: “No news.”

4:38 pm, seven and half hours in, my sister texted: “Things went pretty well with mom’s repair surgery. There was a lot of scar tissue & that’s why it took so long. They were able to connect the colon laparoscopically, however, they had to do a diverting loop to her small intestine, so she’ll need a smaller ostomy on the opposite side. She’ll have to a bag for 6 more weeks & doctor said this repair will be much easier & quicker. Dad’s obviously a bit disappointed. We haven’t seen mom yet. We’re waiting for her to be placed in a room. She’ll probably have a 3 day hospital stay. Thanks for your continued prayers ❤️.”

Three things stood out to me.

1. Deep relief that mom made it through surgery.
2. “Laparoscopically,” is what we hoped for, less invasive, less recovery.
3. “A bag for 6 more weeks,” is a drag, a real, real drag.

As I talked with my dad last night, he had returned home to their quiet villa, alone and exhausted. He had visited with my mom for a while before leaving the hospital. She was on oxygen, getting fluids intravenously. Mom kept her eyes closed, but he said her spirits were high.

I share these details because so many of you supported us in prayer throughout our very long day. As my sister’s text says sweetly, “Thanks for your continued prayers ❤️.”

Prayers offered in faith will restore them from sickness and bring them to health. The Lord will lift them up from the floor of despair (James 5:15a, VOICE).
