Good morning…

Early every morning, God drops new seeds of thought into the rich soil of my innermost being. Yesterday, I received the weekly email from the Ignatius House Retreat Center. It was entitled “Seeds of Hope.”

“Remind yourself that you are in God’s presence,” began the encouraging words. “I ask God for the grace to surrender to the strength of the Lord, and to receive the gift of hope as I wait for all things to be made new.

Then the Scripture verse shared was one we have been mulling over this week, as we have considered the weight of darkness burdening so many in our interconnected world.

Why do you say…
“My way is hidden from the Lord,
and my right is disregarded by my God”?
Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
his understanding is unsearchable.
He gives power to the faint,
and strengthens the powerless.
Even youths will faint and be weary,
and the young will fall exhausted;
but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength,
they shall mount up with wings like eagles,
they shall run and not be weary,
they shall walk and not faint (Isaiah 40:27-31).

Like I said, “Seeds of Hope” was the subject of the morning meditation. As I opened the next email, I smiled at the synchronicity of God’s Spirit. I savored this poem about the power of one seed.

Tiny Yet Mighty by Kai Siedenburg, From Space Between the Stones: Poetry & Practices for Connecting with Nature, Spirit, and Creativity

Don’t let
their tiny size
and humble appearance
fool you.

Seeds are
heroic voyagers,
venturing forth
into the unknown,

journeying
across time
and space
in search of
friendly soil,

with hidden treasures
sewn into
their modest robes—

the power
to create life,
feed
the hungry,
and transform
a landscape.

Behold
the tiny
yet mighty
seed!

With hidden treasures sewn into their modest robes and their complete dependency on the rich darkness of the soil, seeds of hope quietly grow. Bit by bit. Day by day. In the deep down of our soul.

The song below graced the first email and gently watered the living seeds of God. The chorus echoed in my ears as I read aloud to myself the gift of the final prayer:

Lord, I hold my “When’s” and my “How Longs’s” before you. Thank you for finding me in my weariness, in my impatience, and in my disappointments. Increase my hope in you as I wait for the fullness of all things, and give me a sense of peace that as I weather the storms of life you use these moments to strengthen me and increase my desire for your Kingdom. Amen.
