Last weekend, while watching a string of great football games, I noticed on all of the players’ helmets two simple words: CHOOSE LOVE. Wondering the meaning behind this conscious decision, I googled, “choose love on football helmets” and this information popped up.
“Choose Love” on NFL helmets and in end zones is a message of compassion, empathy, and unity, originating from the Buffalo Bills after a 2022 mass shooting, and adopted by the league for playoff games to honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, promoting love over hate, and recognizing resilience, especially after events like Damar Hamlin’s collapse. It’s part of the NFL’s Inspire Change initiative, allowing players to choose positive social messages reflecting shared humanity.
Compassion.
Empathy.
Unity.
Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
Love over hate.
Resilience.
Inspire change.
Choose positive social messages.
Reflect our shared humanity.
All of these bonding phrases unpack the conscious choice set before us. It is always possible to CHOOSE LOVE. Coming alongside us, Proverbs 10:12 offers some colorful translations.
Hatred fuels dissension, but love calms all rebellions (VOICE). Hatred starts fights, but love pulls a quilt over the bickering (MSG). Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers and overwhelms all transgressions [forgiving and overlooking another’s faults] (AMP).
This day and every day, we make millions of choices. Might we notice, on this wooly winter weekend, all of the ways we CHOOSE LOVE over hatred? Pulling a thick quilt over all of the bickering, we can offer a calming presence in the face of dissension.
