mass

Good morning…

On Saturday, July 5th, out of the blue, I received this special card in honor of Audrey DeShetler. Audrey went to heaven on Sunday, June 8th, ten hours before her twentieth birthday. Not being catholic, I was not sure what it meant to hold a Mass for a loved one who has passed. So I wrote to Betsie, a loyal, longtime member of our written word community, and we shared this text string.

Me: Hi Betsie. Can you tell me the church address and the details of the mass being held on the 18th? I want to share the info with the DeShetlers and our written word community. Thank you for sharing God’s love in such a tangible way.

Betsie: Good morning. The Mass will be offered by our pastor at Christ the King in Mt. Pleasant, SC, 1149 Russell Dr. It is our privilege for our parishioners to pray for this faithful young lady and her family.

Me: Thank you so much, Betsie. What happens in a Mass like this? Not being catholic, I love learning about your sacred rhythms. Audrey loved these beautiful new gifts she received from her semester at Notre Dame, a place deeply rooted in catholic traditions.

Betsie: Our parish, as many do, celebrates the Holy Sacrifice of Mass daily. When a Mass is offered for someone, they are lifted up in this most sacred way – asking God to receive our dear ones into His kingdom. It’s amazing to know there are people everywhere praying for others they will never see or know until we meet in heaven. It’s what brings unity to God’s children. Your written word community is a beautiful example. Thank you.

Me: Thank you so much, Betsie.

Today is July 18th, and the Mass in Audrey’s honor will take place at 7:00 am. Please join me in admiring the web of prayerful support God is weaving between Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina and Atlanta, Georgia, between catholic and protestant, between this earth and the heavens.

…we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior. He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like his own, using the same power with which he will bring everything under his control (Philippians 3:20-21, NLT).
