Good morning…

I have discovered a simple way to pray. Recently, I pulled out an old gift given to me by a lifelong friend: a strip of crystal glass, two inches wide and one foot long, with a line of six openings to nestle tea lights. In our old house, it lived on our kitchen island. Where was it to live in our new home?

If you know me, you know I love to take a long, hot bath every day. So, on the ledge to the left of my tub, I placed my transparent candle holder. Every time I take a bath, I light six tiny tea lights, lifting a prayer with every wick. I light one wick for my husband and his concerns. I light one wick for the burdens on my heart. I light one individual wick for each of our four kids, each with their own pressing needs. I lift our names to the LORD and name the needs of our immediate family. Day after day, I lift our names and name our needs. Beside these unscented tea lights, I place a scented candle, a candle I light to represent the needs outside our home. Concerns of friends. Needs of extended family. Woes of the world, too many to name.

Often the best prayers are daily and deliberate. As the hot water melts tensions, the individually lit wicks melt like wax the concerns living in my heart.

My life is poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax, melting within me, Psalm 22:14 (NLT),
