Good morning…
When I worked as a play therapist, I had an option every day. I could drive Route 30 from my home in Gettysburg, PA, a straight, twenty minute shot to my office in New Oxford. Or I could leave my home a little bit earlier and meander for thirty minutes, twisting-and-turning through farmlands strewn with cows, barns, and horses, weaving through the countryside of nature’s colors, smells, and sounds.
Over time, I learned that my method of travel set in motion my entire day. If I left the house and rushed to my office down four-lane Route 30, internally I would be as busy and speeded-up as the road I had just traveled. If I decided to take the back road, rolling down my windows, breathing in God’s lively world, I would arrive at the office slowed down, settled in my soul.
We live in a world that values the highway, the quick fix, the straight shot. Our God-designed being comes alive on life’s quiet back roads, where senses are tickled and a slower pace is beloved. Whatever our job, whatever our life stage, whatever items fill today’s to-do list, we have an option every day. Route 30? Back roads? Our method of travel sets in motion our entire day.
The holy Lord God of Israel had told all of you, “I will keep you safe if you turn back to me and calm down. I will make you strong if you quietly trust me.” Then you stubbornly said, “No! We will safely escape on speedy horses.” But those who chase you will be even faster, Isaiah 30:15-16 (CEV),
