Good morning…
When our oldest son was a little boy, he used to search for the smallest grape in every cluster. This fun memory quietly returned when I met an Estonian proverb: “Who does not thank for little will not thank for much.”
Now please read with me a Biblical proverb, a proverb I have structured a bit for easier reading.
There are four creatures on earth that are small, but they are very wise and we can learn from them:
1) While ants are hardly a strong species, they work constantly to store up food during the summer;
2) While badgers are animals without many defenses, they are wise enough to make their homes in the rocky cliffs;
3) While locusts live without a ruler, they all know how to move in formation;
4) While a lizard is easy enough to catch in your hand, it is shrewd enough to enter the palaces of kings (Proverbs 30:24-28, The Voice).
We connect the dots of these two proverbs. Store up nourishment. Shrewdly wise, make a safe home. Know how to move together in formation. With each cluster of moments we are given, might we search for the smallest gems like our growing son?
“What is the littlest thing I am thankful for right now?”
