Good morning... God reminds me once again. The word 'cling' in Old English is 'clingan' and 'clingan' means to shrink. Those smaller gods to which we cling shrink very important parts of us. Very important parts of us atrophy when we cling to anything but God. “I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from...the place of your [...]
Good morning... "Surely the Chinese curse is upon us: 'May you live in interesting times!'" writes Margaret Silf, author of The Other Side of Chaos, one of the books we are studying in my living room this semester. "And the ideogram for crisis also comes to mind, with its combination of the symbols representing 'danger' and 'opportunity' - a [...]
Good morning... As Hillary Clinton stood in purple at the podium giving her concession speech to our nation, she referenced a familiar Bible verse: Let us not become weary in doing good. Later scouring Scripture, I found my way to the reference and to it's biblical context. Don’t be misled: No one makes a fool of God. What a [...]
Good morning... I prayed in bed for a long, long time before getting up to make coffee. I fell asleep last night to the din of election results, rolling in, rolling in, neck and neck. Strangely, right now I am savoring not knowing who won, sort of like when I was pregnant and did not know the answer, "Boy [...]
Good morning... Today many of our hearts hurt for an autistic boy who is forced to bury his father after a tragic death. A mother of another autistic child in our community introduced me to a story, a story that teaches us all about loving the unique life sitting upon our lap. "Welcome to Holland" is a thought-provoking, creative [...]
Good morning... Each day I write along the tender tightrope spanning transparency and trust. Developing trust in our living LORD, in God's Holy Spirit power, my vulnerable fingers need to listen well for wisdom. Encouraging transparency in myself and other people, I share the raw-real, expanding edge of my imperfect self. On the cusp between my conscious and unconscious [...]
"An important aspect of living through change and transition is the ability to take the longer view," I read aloud these words to my class. "A fly walking across a work of art such as the Mona Lisa would have absolutely no chance of making sense of what was beneath its feet. Even we, who think we can see the whole [...]
Good morning... A new truth dawns on me. Beauty has nothing to do with age or weight, body type or hair style. Beauty has everything to do with radiance. Whenever our college-aged daughter comes home for the weekend, she loves to go to Passion City for worship. Last Sunday, she and I enjoyed the 9:30 am service. As the [...]
Good morning… After I spoke at a recent gathering, I was given a precious "Thank you" gift, a pack of tiny cards bearing scripture verses and a miniature cardholder. The gift now lives in my guest bath, and I change the position of the twenty-three cards regularly. This morning, the card in the front bears this Bible verse. "I [...]
Good morning... I love the promise given in the Message translation of Luke 1:79. Through the heartfelt mercies of our God, God’s Sunrise will break in upon us, Shining on those in the darkness, those sitting in the shadow of death, Then showing us the way, one foot at a time, down the [...]
