Good morning…

Today I will enjoy the privilege of talking with the Preschool Prayer Moms at Northside Church. The organizer said, “I think it would be fun for you to talk about the movie Groundhog Day and liken it to our never-ending days as preschool moms, adding a scripture to encourage us along.”

“What an awesome idea!” My mind ran off to play with all the possibilities. I looked up movie quotes spoken by actors Bill Murray and Andie McDowell in the beloved 1993 film, a film in which the same day repeats itself again and again until the main character, Phil Connor, develops into his best self and finds true love. I prepared a quick questionnaire based on my favorite quotes. Here is a sneak-peak to help you prayerfully reflect as you wake this Groundhog Day.

“No matter what happens tomorrow or for the rest of my life, I’m happy now.” -Phil Connors
What makes me happiest right now?

“Today is tomorrow. It happened!” – Phil Connors
Today will become tomorrow soon enough. What will I miss most about this passing life phase?

“It’s so beautiful!… Let’s live here. [he kisses Rita] We’ll rent, to start.” – Phil Connors
Having “rented to start,” on what home am I feeling inclined to put a “down payment”? A person? An opportunity? A deeper calling I sense coming alive?

“I’m just amazed, and I’m not easily amazed.” – Rita
When did I last feel complete amazement?

“When Chekhov saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life. But standing here among the people of Punxsutawney and basking in the warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn’t imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter.” – Phil Connors
To me, what feels most bleak and dark and hopeless about this life season?

Honoring this season as “just another step in the cycle of life,” how might I “bask in the warmth of hearth and hearts” amid this long and lustrous winter?

The God of every season crafts the cycle of life: “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease,” (Genesis 8:22, NIV). Groundhog Day 2017 has never been before and will never come again, how will you celebrate this single day of sun mixed with shadows?
