first

Good morning…

When our four kids were growing up, going to Lovett where their dad was the chaplain, we would always take a picture before they jumped into the car for their first day of school each year. Here is a charming example of our annual ritual, celebrating one “first day of school” with a photo.

Last week, we enjoyed our first vacation as a family since our new daughter-in-law has joined the Allen clan. Banff, Canada was a perfect place to celebrate together the growth of our family.

The day after returning home, our youngest son began his first real job.

“You’ll definitely have to take a ‘first day of work’ photo,” the kids decided. So, in the morning before he hopped in the car to drive to his new job, we snapped a shot of our twenty-three year old and posted this picture on our family group text. What a goofy way to celebrate life together.

Celebrating firsts as a family is a fun tradition. There are so many firsts to experience throughout our lifetime. First steps. First words. First birthdays. First school days. First loves. First breakups. First graduations. First jobs. First moves. First weddings. First homes. First grandchildren. First funerals. First experiences of eternal life and forever love.

What firsts are happening in your life today, this week, this summer? Every day God rains down new gifts. In what ways might you celebrate the big and the small firsts surrounding this unique season of your ordinary life?

Celebrate God all day, every day (Philippians 4:4a, MSG).

P.S. Many of you played an important role in Jeremiah landing his first job, as you supported his entrepreneurial spirit and hired him to pressure wash at your home and pick up your Christmas trees for the past several years. Thank you for supporting his hard working efforts. Here’s another first to celebrate. This month he sold his pressure washing machines to another young man with an entrepreneurial spirit.
