Good morning…

Twenty-nine years ago today, I woke up in Ohio on my wedding day. Excitement and nerves. Family and friends. Fears and hopes. I woke to it all. I remember getting my hair done after taking a mid-morning nap, being surrounded by the special people who had influenced my first twenty-four years, and soaking up hugs and good wishes from the receiving line of loved ones. I will never forget taking photos at my childhood church then driving in our “Just married!” Ford Escort to our rustic reception, dancing, exchanging messy cake pieces, celebrating together as husband and wife.

Today, I wake up in Georgia to a calm, quiet home, full of a sleeping family. Our dog Gracie still snuggles with my husband in bed. Around 5:45 am, I will wake our seventeen year old daughter, making her chocolate chip pancakes before sending her off on her high school’s five day backpacking trip for rising seniors. After he chooses to wake to his own alarm and make his own breakfast, I will drive our almost fifteen year old son to today’s middle school final exam. When our nineteen year old daughter wakes in her comfy, oversized bed, she’ll run with a friend before heading off to today’s babysitting job. After our twenty-one year old son wakes in his temporary room, I will make him chocolate chip pancakes before he heads to the first day of his summer’s finance internship. My husband will run and shower before he heads to work, I’ll walk-n-talk with a friend, and we’ll celebrate our anniversary evening at a high school baseball game, where our school will hopefully bring home a state title.

Twenty-nine years ago today, we had no idea what our future would hold. The one thing we did know is Who would hold our future. The God who was designing my husband and me in our mothers’ separate wombs fifty-four years ago is the same God who joined us as two unique individuals into one new being on our wedding day in 1987. We still have no idea what our future holds, but we continue to know, increasingly more intimately, the Artist of the universe holding our future.

Jesus said, “…In the original creation, God made male and female to be together. Because of this, a man leaves father and mother, and in marriage he becomes one flesh with a woman—no longer two individuals, but forming a new unity. Because God created this organic union of the two sexes, no one should desecrate his art by cutting them apart” (Mark 10:7-9, MSG).
