light

Good morning…

Refocusing my scattered attention, a friend sent me his favorite Christmas poems. Here is one for us to enjoy today, accompanied by the wisdom of Scripture, amplified with an uplifting song.

I Will Light Candles from The Mood of Christmas by Howard Thurman

I will light Candles this Christmas,
Candles of joy despite all the sadness,
Candles of hope where despair keeps watch,
Candles of courage for fears ever present,
Candles of peace for tempest-tossed days,
Candles of grace to ease heavy burdens,
Candles of love to inspire all my living,
Candles that will burn all year long.

Everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light (Ephesians 5:13, NIV).

Facing sadness and despair, fears and heavy burdens, might we offer our wick to God and choose to be a light? Surely, You will light my candle. The LORD, my God, will lighten my darkness (Psalm 18:28, RGT).

Whatever is happening, God can ignite joy. God can illuminate hope. God can spark courage. God can pass along peace. God can give grace. God can light love. Set ablaze by the Spirit of God, might we burn all year long?

Go out into the world uncorrupted, a breath of fresh air in this squalid and polluted society. Provide people with a glimpse of good living and of the living God. Carry the light-giving Message into the night (Philippians 2:15, MSG).
