Good morning…
In the fall of 2004, I remember sitting across the lunch table from a forever friend. “I feel like my life is just a smattering of random dots,” I heard myself say. “God has littered my page with daily commitments and important relationships, different interests and future possibilities. When I look at my life right now, all I see is a page filled with scattered, disconnected dots. I have no idea what design God is making out of me.”
As a mom of kids then 3, 5, 7, and 9, I was stretched thin, overwhelmed by the responsibilities growing like weeds around me, yearning to make meaning of the random dots scattering my ordinary days. Eye to eye, my friend listened to my soul calling for help from beneath my myriad roles.
About a week later, I received a small card in the mail. I opened the envelop to find a picture of an ordinary fisherman on a sunny day, dangling his worm-clad hook over the side of a tiny boat. Beneath the surface of the water, outside of the fisherman’s view, lurked a huge fish just about to take the bait. I flipped open the card to read four simple words: “Expect a big catch.”
“There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?” “Tell everyone to sit down,” Jesus said. So they all sat down on the grassy slopes. (The men alone numbered about 5,000.) Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and distributed them to the people. Afterward he did the same with the fish. And they all ate as much as they wanted. After everyone was full, Jesus told his disciples, “Now gather the leftovers, so that nothing is wasted,” John 6:9-12 (NLT),
