Good morning…
Parents age. Heck, we all age. Might we enjoy supporting this natural process?
As we mature, life’s essentials become key. Eating. Sleeping. Feeling well. Nurturing friendships. Connecting with family. Remembering good times. I enjoy visiting my parents in Ohio, because I quite easily relax into their slower pace. Coffee. Banana. Peanut butter. Conversations about life. Planning a few things for each day. A walk. A drive. A doctor appointment. What to eat for lunch and dinner. Which shows to watch on TV. Decisions are basic and very life-giving. There are special things to celebrate along life’s way. Birthdays. Anniversaries. Holidays. New births. Sad deaths. The annual musical performance at their senior living community.
After church in the morning and their Sunday afternoon performance, we got a treat at Dairy Queen and took a drive through our hometown, we ate a light dinner and, on TV, we happened upon the 98th birthday celebration for Dick Van Dyke. Cuddled up on the couch and their comfy recliners, we thoroughly enjoyed highlights from Bye Bye Birdie. Mary Poppins. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The Dick Van Dyke Show. The Carol Burnett Show. Diagnosis: Murder. What a fun way to spend a day!
Each day is different, with its own blend of hard and happy, pain and passion, joys and sorrows. We do well to walk in step with God and each other, as we enjoy this evolving process.
So you must be very careful how you live. Live like people who are wise… Many bad things are happening in these days. So, whenever you have a chance to do something good, do as much as you can. Do not live like fools. But instead, understand what the Lord wants you to do (Ephesians 5:15-17, EASY).
I think the Lord wants us to enjoy aging with our loved ones.
