Good morning…

In the wee hours of the night, I research the history of Veterans Day. Discovering an informative article, I read a concise description.

“Veterans Day is a U.S. legal holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars, and Veterans Day 2024 will occur on Monday, November 11. In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I, then known as ‘the Great War.’

Commemorated in many countries as Armistice Day the following year, November 11th became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became known as Veterans Day.”

As we savor the freedom granted to us this day, we join our hearts and lift a prayer, grateful for our veterans. To all who have served our country with passion and compassion, we send the healing love of God across space and across time zones.

Living, loving Lord, we thank you for your unchanging character; your powerful presence remains the same yesterday, today and forever. Hear our prayer on behalf of all the veterans who have fought wholeheartedly to protect the freedom we enjoy today. Please pour out abundant blessings on each person who has sacrificed much in service to our country. As they and their loved ones face many challenging changes, we ask that they would find comfort in your unchanging love and care. May your grace grow joy in their hearts, may your love grow strength in hard times, and may your Spirit grow healing peace deep down in their souls. Thank you, God. Amen.

As you consider all of the veterans you personally know, mighty you keep them tucked close in your heart and in your mind today? Use your freedom to serve one another in love; that’s how freedom grows (Galatians 5:13, MSG).
