heartbreak

Good morning…

“What people stand to discover…is the close relationship between individual heartbreak and the brokenheartedness of the world,” notices Barbara Brown Taylor in Learning to Walk in the Dark. “While those who are frightened by the primal energy of dark emotions try to avoid them, becoming more and more cut off from the world at large, those who are willing to wrestle with angels break out of their isolation by dirtying their hands with the emotions that rattle them most.” (85)

The close relationship between my heartbreak and the brokenheartedness of this world is a powerful two-way artery. With so much heavy heartbreak, in Maine and Ukraine, in Israel and Gaza, in the lives of so many I so dearly love, my own heart breaks beneath the weight. I am willing to wrestle with angels, messengers who help me to come to rest with God amid all the pain.

In close relationship with God and in solidarity with those hurting, I break out of my isolation and find my way to a place of inner peace. I dirty my hands in the soil of our shared humanity, praying through the intense emotions that rattle me most.

If your heart is broken, you’ll find God right there; if you’re kicked in the gut, he’ll help you catch your breath (Psalm 34:18, MSG).
