light

Good morning…

Again, I wake around 1:00 am. The darkness looks so different in this quiet moment. Pictured in our blog post, stripes of light were shining on our bathroom floor and tub at this time yesterday. Now, exactly twenty-four hours later, the only natural form of light is hiding outside our window. With photos taken at the exact same time, one night apart, the contrast intrigues me.

Might light in darkness be changing form with each passing hour?

Again, I step outside as our little dog relieves her tiny bladder. From a similar spot in our front yard, I snap a photo, just like I did last night. Once again, exactly twenty-four hours later, the contrast between these unique experiences of moonlight in the dark is striking, very striking.

Inside, darkness is always mixed with light. Outside, darkness is always mixed with light. With each passing twenty-four hours, light illuminates our darkness in subtly different ways.

Exploring the mystery of mourning in his book The Quiet House, Ron Greer explains: “In the early months, the pain was acute and constant. Then it became deep and consistent. And now, with more healing, it has become tender and periodic.” (97)

Light with dark, dark with light. First one blend, then another. We experience a mysteriously new mixture every twenty-four hours. Might we train our eyes to see the healing movement born from mourning well?

In the beginning God said, “Lights, come out! Shine in the vast expanse of heavens’ sky dividing day from night to mark the seasons, days, and years. Lights, warm the earth with your light.” It happened just as God said (Genesis 1:14, VOICE).

How much do we trust our Creator to illuminate our way through the muted mixture of right now? With an evolving blend of light and warmth, the Almighty continues to mark the seasons, the days, and the years.

Healing light transforming our darkness? It is happening just as God said.
