parents

Good morning…

Yesterday, I flew to Cleveland, Ohio to watch my parents perform “Guys and Dolls” with sixty friends from their senior living community. The place is abuzz! At ages 85 and 86, they fit right in with the cast and the chorus members who range from age 72 to 96. Having practiced twice a week for months and months, tonight’s ninety minute show is one of seven sold-out performances this weekend and next. The creative endeavor has even made the news, being highlighted on two local stations. As my parents head to the green room tonight, I’ll head out to dinner with my sister and her family before the nine of us take in the magic of tonight’s musical performed with costumes and seated in chairs.

As many of you know, it’s been a challenging year for my parents. My mom’s fall in March of 2022. Her slow steady recovery from a broken femur. A sudden stroke and sepsis. A very scary stint in the ICU. Her returning to us through many prayers and the sound of love in my father’s voice. Wheelchair, walker, more slow recovery. Then another broken femur from a second fall. Back to skilled nursing. More physical and occupational therapy. Wheelchair, walker, now she walks well with her cane. Waking up in my parents’ independent living villa this morning, I am filled with gratitude.

Savoring the progress from last year to this weekend, what a joy it will be to experience tonight’s life-giving performance of “Guys and Dolls.”

So I recommend having fun, because there is nothing better for people in this world than to eat, drink, and enjoy life. That way they will experience some happiness along with all the hard work God gives them under the sun (Ecclesiastes 8:15, NLT).
