magic

Good morning…

“And above all,” says the Roald Dahl quote tucked in a beautiful thank you card, “watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”

Watching with glittering eyes, I have seen the magic of our Maker grow strong in unexpected places this week.

“How was your day?” asked the text from my dear artist friend, Corinne Adams. She was hosting a studio sale at the same time I was sharing re-created gifts at another friend’s Holiday Market last weekend. (Being a first timer, selling handmade jewelry and scarves, journals and orphaned art, candles and framed sayings, at a sale benefiting Blue Skies Ministries was definitely an unlikely place for me to be.)

“I didn’t have many shoppers,” Corinne explained, “which makes me get more creative. So do you think we could share our gifts with the PAWkids families for free? Help me think of better ways to give away.”

“Yes, let’s keep brainstorming about creatively supporting PAWkids as we expand our sense of authentic community,” I texted back. “I love brainstorming with you.”

Surprisingly spurred on, I texted my new friend LaTonya Gates, the founder of PAWkids, letting her know that Corinne and I had gifts to freely give away. Almost immediately LaTonya unexpectedly called.

“Sue, we are wanting to create one hundred Christmas gift bags for the seniors in our community, having the gifts delivered by the policemen in our Grove Park community to strengthen a trusting bond,” she said. “Would you and your friends like to take on this project with us?”

My heart leapt! I was witnessing the magic of our Maker. Do your glittering eyes see the magic too?

Unexpectedly Corinne asked, “Help me think of better ways to give away.” Effortlessly I reached out to my new friend. Almost immediately LaTonya responded with a life-giving opportunity for the seniors and the policemen in our downtown community and the generous women in our neck of the whole world.

I spent much of yesterday packing up gift items from my friend’s treehouse and delivering them to Corinne, who will transport them to her art studio today. Corinne’s studio will be our sacred spot of magic-making. Anyone interested is welcome to join us in the joy of creating one hundred Christmas gift bags for the seniors in Grove Park, gifts hand-delivered by the caring policemen in our community.

I believe in the magic of the Holy Spirit powerfully at work in our midst. Watching the whole world around us with glittering eyes, might we trust that God’s greatest secrets are often hidden in the most unlikely places?

I want you woven into a tapestry of love, in touch with everything there is to know of God. Then you will have minds confident and at rest, focused on Christ, God’s great mystery. All the richest treasures of wisdom and knowledge are embedded in that mystery and nowhere else. And we’ve been shown the mystery! (Colossians 2:2-3, MSG).
