Good morning…

The man who had everything craved even more. “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” demanded the rich, young ruler.

Jesus replied in the man’s achievement-oriented language, rattling off the famous checklist. “You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’”

Impatiently interrupting our Teacher, the proud and powerful man scoffed, “All these I have kept since I was a boy.”

When Jesus heard this, he zeroed in on the life-changing kernel of truth. “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure on earth as it is in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

When the man heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy (paraphrase of Luke 18:18-23, NIV).

As we end 2016 and begin 2017, what life-changing kernel of truth is Jesus revealing? “You still lack one thing…” Ponder with me this morning, “God, to what ‘one thing’ am I clinging which sadly shrinks heavens treasures and keeps me from following Your lead?”
