Good morning…
“Our psalm for the week is 31,” she wrote, “and this was in the devotional I received from the church this morning. Thought I’d share.”

Psalm 31 reminds us that trust isn’t a feeling; it’s a decision made in the middle of fear. It’s the steady rhythm of naming what’s hard and choosing to believe that God’s character is steady, even when our circumstances are not. From a Reformed lens, trust means placing our confidence not in what we can control, but in who God has proven Himself to be. It’s the daily act of leaning into His goodness when we don’t yet see His plan.
Gracious Lord,
You are our fortress when life feels uncertain.
You are our refuge when we don’t know what comes next.
Teach us to rest in Your presence even when the answers haven’t come.
Help us trust, not because we see the outcome, but because we know You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

“Oh, I love this,” I replied. “In our monthly spiritual growth group, one mom of three school aged kids said, ‘When I feel fear, I tighten up. I get hard. And kindness evaporates. I cannot access my kindness when I am afraid.’ We all could relate.”
“And so your message offers a remedy for our fear,” I continued. “‘Trust is a decision to be made in the middle of fear.’ Such a perfect match, wedding your church’s wisdom with my friend’s honest insight. Thank you for sharing!”
Our feeling of fear deepens us into God’s presence.
- Trust is not a feeling. It’s a decision to be made in the middle of fear.
- When we feel afraid, we tighten up, we get hard, and kindness evaporates.
- When we feel fear, might we take time to name what is hard?
- We choose to believe that God’s character is steady, even when our circumstances are not.
- In trust, we place our confidence not in what we can control, but in who God has proven Himself to be.
- Trust is the daily act of leaning into God’s goodness when we don’t yet see His plan.
- Surrendering into trust, we access the power of God’s Spirit and kindness grows.
God’s Spirit causes us to live in a different way. We love other people. We are happy and we have peace in our minds. We are patient, kind and good. People can trust us to do what is right. We respect other people and we rule ourselves properly. God’s Spirit helps us to live in that way (Galatians 5:22-23a, EASY).
Help us trust, not because we see the outcome or have the answers, but because we surrender into You, and we see Your Spirit spreading.
