storm

Good morning…

As the song from yesterday’s blog post ended, I was mysteriously led into a music video entitled “The Story Behind – The Anchor Holds written and performed by Lawrence Chewning.”

“We had one of those years,” Lawrence admits. “It was 1992. My wife and I call it ‘our year of sorrows.'”

Pain piled up. The death of his dad. His wife’s serious health issues. Burnout from division in their church. Their third miscarriage at thirteen weeks. Discouragement and depression led to his own dark night of the soul. Overwhelmed by brokenness, Chewning took a six month sabbatical.

“What I started doing was playing the piano again,” he said. “For hours at a time I played the piano. It was real therapy for me.” Then, rising up from deep deep down in his soul, original music began to emerge. God was writing through Lawrence a song of healing.

Now think with me:

  1. In your own life, what season might you call “my year of sorrows”?
  2. Name parts in your own pile of pain.
  3. From deep deep down in your soul, what original music began to emerge?
  4. In spite of the storm, describe how you know, “The anchor holds.”

The music video below paves our way to hope and healing. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary (Psalm 55:4, NLT).

Sometime over this weekend, please join me in taking a few quiet moments to enjoy Lawrence’s heartfelt story and moving song.
