vote

Good morning…

In our neck of the woods, we have so many amazing churches and wise leaders speaking truth into our lives. This week a friend shared with me an encouraging email sent by her pastor. Now I share a portion of his passionate letter with you.

Politics And Peace, excerpt from congregational letter by Bill Britt, October 23, 2020

Commit yourself to daily prayer

On October 6, 1774, John Wesley wrote these words in his journal:

“I met those of our society who had votes in the ensuing election, and advised them:

To vote, without fee or reward, for the person they judged most worthy
To speak no evil of the person they voted against
To take care their spirits were not sharpened against those that voted on the other side.”

I encourage you to prayerfully meditate upon these words each day prior to the election.

Vote on Tuesday, November 3 (or before!)

I would never suggest how you should vote, but I will not shrink from reminding you that one of the great privileges of being a citizen of this great country is the opportunity to vote and have a say in who will represent us in government. Don’t forsake this sacred right.

Finally, in the days after the election –

Commit yourself to working with your fellow Peachtree Road members to make this a better world – focus especially upon these words of Paul:

“Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another…” – Romans 12:15-16

Jesus calls us to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. In the days to come, do all in your power to be salt and light, and the peace of Christ will be with you.

Salt draws out the good flavors subtly hidden in food and preserves what would otherwise spoil, as we are intended to do as the children of God. Through deep daily prayer, our LORD empowers us to bring out the good flavors subtly hidden in this election season, preserving the peace which might otherwise spoil, equipping us to shine God’s light on everyone, everywhere we go.

You, beloved, are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes bland and loses its saltiness, can anything make it salty again? No. It is useless. It is tossed out, thrown away, or trampled.

And you, beloved, are the light of the world. A city built on a hilltop cannot be hidden. Similarly it would be silly to light a lamp and then hide it under a bowl. When someone lights a lamp, she puts it on a table or a desk or a chair, and the light illumines the entire house. You are like that illuminating light. Let your light shine everywhere you go, that you may illumine creation, so men and women everywhere may see your good actions, may see creation at its fullest, may see your devotion to Me, and may turn and praise your Father in heaven because of it (Matthew 5:13-16, VOICE).

I am extremely grateful for all of the salty, light-bearing peacemakers who are amplifying God’s powerful presence among us during this political season and beyond.
