Good morning…

Spending quality time with a friend who is seventy-eight years old, I read aloud to her this poem written by Becky Hemsley. “I have spent my whole life trying to please people,” she responded. “It’s exhausting and impossible. This poem gives me permission to just breathe and be me.”

Now as you read aloud this life-giving poem, slow and soft, might you also sense the same invitation?

breathe

My friend explained, “It’s like the left side of the page is filled with the demanding voices of the world and the right side of the page offers the still, small voice of God. It feels like the devil sitting on my left shoulder and an angel sitting on my right. As I head into the final season of my life, might I finally lean into the right side of this poem?”

Whatever season surrounds us, might we step towards the still, small voice of God and just let ourselves breathe?

The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty has given me life (Job 33:4, MEV).
