Good morning…
As we peer through our window into the day at hand, do we see the slow, small things quietly taking God’s time? Snails. Erosion. Transformation. Organic growth. Healing whole. Blossoming relationships. Living in peace. The dying process. Becoming like Christ. Learning to listen well to God.
In a world that values faster, bigger, louder, so much of what God does is slow, small, quiet. This story from 1 Kings 19:11-13 (MEV) now rises up from within to tickle my attention.
God said, “Go and stand on the mountain before the Lord.”
And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind split the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind, an earthquake came, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake, a fire came, but the Lord was not in the fire, and after the fire, a still, small voice. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood in the entrance to the cave.
And a voice came to him and said, “Why are you here, Elijah?”
The question now echos in our ears. “Why are you here, Sue? Why are you here, Marie? Why are you here, Joan? Why are you here, Cathy? Why are you here, ________? (insert your own name).” In this very moment, in this very place, why are you and I here?
As we focus on the slow, the small, and the quiet blessings being orchestrating by God right now, might we develop the art of listening well to the still, small voice coming to us?
Focusing our whole self on the still, small voice, might we hear and see, be and say, do and live with the help of God?
…Sue…
