graduation

Good morning…

Today is a day to celebrate the bittersweetness of life.

In the morning, I will experience with entire The Lovett School community the final chapel led by my husband, Steve. After 29 years as chaplain, Steve will deliver his final sermon to the kids (kindergarten through 12th grade), the faculty, and the parents in attendance. He will remain on Lovett’s chaplain team full time as Chaplain Emeritus, providing pastoral care for alumni, doing weddings and funerals, and creating life-changing global travel opportunities for adults connected to the broader community. Still, savoring Steve’s final chapel message this morning will feel bittersweet.

Then in the evening, we will experience the graduation of our youngest son in Sanford Stadium at the University of Georgia. He is the last of our four kids to graduate from college, marking over twenty-five years of us supporting our children’s formal education. We are excited about tonight’s monumental accomplishment, yet I know the celebration will feel bittersweet.

As we move through the chapters of life, uncontrollable and unstoppable, we live into the song lyrics from yesterday’s post, I Miss Ordinary Days.

Days are moving slowly

but the years go by so fast.

Let me linger in the moments

before they turn into the past.

How I want to make them last.

– JJ Heller

As I contentedly take in Steve’s last chapel message and our family’s final graduation, in my heart I will make these moments last.

So we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are unseen; for the things which are visible are temporal [just brief and fleeting], but the things which are invisible are everlasting and imperishable (2 Corinthians 4:18, AMP).
