Good morning…
In yesterday’s summertime Zoom book study, our conversation was rich and enlivening. The word “stone” stood out as a symbol to remember.
In The Practice of the Presence of God, Brother Lawrence writes on page 37: “As for my set hours of prayer… Sometimes I consider myself there as a stone before a carver, whereof he is to make a statue; presenting myself thus before God, I desire Him to form His perfect image in my soul, and make me entirely like Himself… I know that some charge this state with inactivity… I confess it is holy inactivity.”
I can’t shape my soul. Only God can. My task is to put in the hours, resting inactive, letting God carve away.
Doesn’t the potter have the right to shape the clay in any way he chooses? Can’t he make one lump into an elegant vase, and another into a common jug? Absolutely (Romans 9:21, VOICE).
Dear God, help us to rest, inactive, as you, hour by hour, shape our soul.
