Good morning…
“After my mother passed away we were going through her things and this poem was in her wallet,” wrote one subscriber after my 4.21.17 post. She continued, “I thought I would send you all of the verses my mother had on this little card she carried in her wallet.”
i thank you god for this amazing day:
for the leaping greenly spirits of trees and a blue true dream of sky;
and for everything
which is natural
which is infinite
which is yes
(i who have died am alive again today,
and this is the sun’s birthday;
this is the birth day of life and of love and wings;
and of the gay great happening illimitably earth)
how should tasting touching hearing seeing breathing say
– lifted from the no of all nothing –
human merely being doubt unimaginable You?
(now the ears of my ears awake
and now the eyes of my eyes are opened) – e. e. cumming
“I am reminded of her sweet soul when you shared this first verse on your blog,” she wrote. “We read this poem when we scattered her and my dad’s ashes in the Pacific Ocean.” “Oh, how sweet,” I quickly wrote back. “Might I share your story with our subscribers? This extended version of the poem is so so beautiful, so so meaningful. I love the way our souls feel like sisters.” “Yes of course! Poetry is written to share!” she naturally gave her infinite yes.
The heavens keep telling
the wonders of God,
and the skies declare
what he has done.
Each day informs
the following day;
each night announces
to the next.
They don’t speak a word,
and there is never
the sound of a voice.
Yet their message reaches
all the earth,
and it travels
around the world.
In the heavens a tent
is set up for the sun.
It rises like a bridegroom
and gets ready like a hero
eager to run a race.
It travels all the way
across the sky.
Nothing hides from its heat.
The Law of the Lord is perfect;
it gives us new life.
His teachings last forever,
and they give wisdom
to ordinary people. (Psalm 19:1-7, CEV)
As poetry and scripture flow mingled down, our ordinary ears wake up and our teary eyes open wide to God.
