Good morning…

“She clung to the hope she could feel free and whole,” says page 46 in The Hidden Life Awakened. “She understood, on some deep, barely conscious level, that if she would persevere and be patient with the pace of grace, God would finally show her the way to peace.” As I read these words aloud in class, I was drawn like a magnet to God’s simple invitation: “Be patient with the pace of grace.”

Grace is a mother. We are her newborn. Rocking in the cozy chair. Bonding in the early dark. Together we rock forward: “There is nothing I can do to make God love me more.” In oneness we rock back: “There is nothing I can do to make God love me less.” Slowly forward. Quietly back. Slowly forward. Quietly back. On some deep, barely conscious level, God’s Word begins to yawn.

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly” (Matthew 11:28-30, MSG).

In rhythmic rocking, God’s unforced grace both yawns and dawns.

Nothing more. – – – Nothing less.

Tired? – – – Come.

Worn out? – – – Get away.

Burned out? – – – Recover life.

I’ll show you. – – – Take real rest.

Walk with Me. – – – Work with Me.

Watch. – – – Learn.

Learn My rhythms. – – – Keep My company.

Live free. – – – Live light.

Nothing more. – – – Nothing less.

Now, like infants at the breast, drink deep of God’s pure kindness. Then you’ll grow up mature and whole in God (1 Peter 2:3, MSG).
