moon

Good morning…

As I walked our dogs after dinner last night, the moon was full and fantastic. On the eve of the midterm elections in the United States, a phrase from a Scripture verse rose up in me as I walked in the glow of the big balloon moon: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.”

Then effortlessly another verse came: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”

These two verses were reassuring to me as I considered the conflict ridden tumult of our human leaders. An eternal source of light breaking into our darkness, bearing on broad shoulders the government of the world. This reminder felt calming and clear. Returning home, I invited my husband out onto the back porch and together we watched the intense light beam through the cloudy darkness.

Then Steve let me know that there would be a total lunar eclipse, a “blood moon” eclipse in our early morning hours, visible around the world as the cool video in this short article shows. After drifting to sleep to the sound of a football game, I was stirred away at 4:40 am, just in time to watch the predicted 5:00 am eclipse viewing.

It was eerie and beautiful, this blood red moon.

My thoughts pivoted to an old familiar song.

“Turn your eyes upon Jesus,

look full in his wonderful face

and the things of earth will grow strangely dim

in the light of his glory and grace.”

Every boot that marched in battle and every uniform stained with blood will be destroyed and thrown into the fire. This will happen when the special child is born. God will give us a son who will be responsible for leading the people. His name will be “Wonderful Counselor, Powerful God, Father Who Lives Forever, Prince of Peace.” His power will continue to grow, and there will be peace without end. This will establish him as the king sitting on David’s throne and ruling his kingdom. He will rule with goodness and justice forever and ever. The strong love that the Lord All-Powerful has for his people will make this happen! (Isaiah 9:5-7, ERV).

Now as the dawning light dispels all darkness, I am drawn to share a funky rendition of this classic hymn. Through highs and lows, wins and losses, hopes and heartaches, may God’s bold promise of growing power and peace without end blend with Lauren Daigle’s voice to guide us through this day of the blood red moon.
