Good morning…
I wake early in deep prayer for my special friend. Today I support her, as she supports her husband, as he lays his father to final rest. After weeks of facing serious health challenges, her father-in-law went to heaven at age 85. My own dad turns 85 this week, and, as many of you know, my 83-year-old mom has struggled with her own serious health challenges this month. So I walk closely in solidarity, sensing her family could be my family.
It has been a whirlwind of a week. Tons of tasks. Intense emotions. Writing the obituary. Planning the service. Caring for his mom. Making final arrangements. Walking and talking to process. Texts back and forth. Constant prayers lifted. Exhaustion sinks in. It has been a whirlwind of a week for my friend and her family.
“What songs do people often use at funerals,” she wondered.
So I checked in with my husband who has presided over many memorable services. “How Great Thou Art. Amazing Grace,” he replied.
I also checked in with my friend who oversees funerals at our church. “Blessed Assurance. Great Is Thy Faithfulness. For All the Saints. Be Thou My Vision. There Is A Balm In Gilead. In the Garden. Because He Lives. Hymn of Promise. Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus. How Great Thou Art,” she replied.
These familiar songs offer the peace, the promises and the palpable presence of our great God. May the strength of our living Lord tenderly carry my friend and her loved ones through this rich day of remembering.
Help carry each other’s burdens. In this way you will follow Christ’s teachings (Galatians 6:2, NOG).
