Good morning…

As I deepen into my Spiritual Direction training program, I find myself marinating in the wise words of Dallas Willard found in The Divine Conspiracy. Here are some favorites quotes I have gathered in my notes.

“The cure for too-much-to-do is solitude and silence, for there you find you are safely more than what you do. And the cure for loneliness is solitude and silence, for there you discover in how many ways you are never alone.” (p 359)

Solitude and silence “give us some space to reform our inmost attitudes toward people and events. They take the world off our shoulders for a time and interrupt our habit of constantly managing things, of being in control, or thinking we are.” (p. 358)

If we begin with solitude and silence, “whatever else is needed will certainly come along.” (p 363)

I know what you are thinking. “If I have too much to do, how can I make space for solitude and silence? If I feel lonely, why would I want to isolate myself into solitude and silence?” These are very good questions to begin asking God personally.

Take the world off your shoulders for a time.
Interrupt the habit of constantly managing and controlling.
Sit still, trusting “Whatever is needed will certainly come along.”

“Here’s what I want you to do: Find a quiet, secluded place so you won’t be tempted to role-play before God. Just be there as simply and honestly as you can manage. The focus will shift from you to God, and you will begin to sense his grace” (Matthew 6:6, MSG).
