Good morning…
When darkness was upon the face of the deep (Genesis 1:2), one Hebrew word sums up the atmosphere into which God spoke the first light. “Tohu.” English words resembling “tohu” describe an experience familiar to many of us.
Confusion.
Emptiness.
Formlessness.
Complete chaos.
“Tohu’s” primeval disorder precedes God’s creative activity. Always has. Always will. A trying time of “tohu” precedes our own sense of clarity, our personal process of being fully formed, and God’s unique ordering of our individual lives. At the mercy of our Creator we must wait, lost in dark “tohu,” until God speaks light into the lantern held in our hopeful hand.
Oh! May the God of green hope fill you up with joy, fill you up with peace, so that your believing lives, filled with the life-giving energy of the Holy Spirit, will brim over with hope! (Romans 15:13, MSG).
