Good morning…
Yesterday, June 9th, hosted two special birthdays. My mom turned 86 years old in Ohio, and Audrey DeShetler turned 19 years old here in Atlanta.
Born on the same day, sixty-seven years apart, both of these women have a strong drive to live life fully.
After falling last Monday night and having surgery to repair a broken hip on Tuesday afternoon, my mom returned to the care center in their senior living community late Thursday night. Amazingly, she felt well enough yesterday to take part in their final performance of Music Man in her wheelchair. Afterwards, my mom enjoyed her 86th birthday party with fourteen extended family members in person, and, present in Spirit, our Atlanta family provided a yummy ice cream cake for the celebration.
Audrey endured a lung cryobiopsy at Emory last week and was admitted to Scottish Rite for treatment based on the results. Yesterday, her friends filled her front yard with “Happy Birthday, Audrey” signs. Early this morning, she heads to Children’s Healthcare of Philadelphia for three to four weeks of proton radiation therapy to address her fifth cancer relapse. Having graduated from Westminster last month, Audrey looks forward to beginning her freshman year at Notre Dame in the fall.
