Good morning…
Walking around the horse farm with my Friday morning friend, I heard myself say, “Knowing our Enneagram number helps us to become more consciously aware of our True Self as we grow to become more and more like Christ.” At that very moment, I looked down and saw a perfect heart-shaped rock. Picking it up and holding it in my hand, I said, “I think this truly is the heart of the matter. Exploring our Enneagram number makes us more consciously aware of God growing us up into the whole person we were created to be right from the start.”
Returning home from the horse farm, I thought, “Didn’t Sue Monk Kidd write something about farmers?” I flipped through When The Heart Waits and, sure enough, I found the word “farmers” on page 38.
“…God makes available inside us all that we need to grow and become whole,” Sue writes. “Jesus himself referred to this truth when he spoke of the kingdom of God as a self-sowing seed. It’s ‘as if a man should scatter seed upon the ground, and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he knows not how. The earth produces of itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain’ (Mark 4:26-28). I love those little-explored words of Jesus. They tell me that the hidden potential and fullness of life is within me. My part is to wait in creative and expectant ways for it to unfold, attentive to the process.”
Now here is where Sue brings in the word “farmers”: “Farmers are usually good at grasping Jesus’ concept of the self-sowing seed. They know that the flower is contained in the seed. Everything is present there. One can only wait and watch and be present to it as it blossoms. This is an important principle in waiting: coming to the enormous realization that there are seed forces within us. The potential for wholeness, Life with a capital L, is fully here. We don’t have to go out in conquest and make it happen. We can simply let it happen, consciously.”
Then Jesus said, “God’s kingdom is like seed thrown on a field by a man who then goes to bed and forgets about it. The seed sprouts and grows—he has no idea how it happens. The earth does it all without his help: first a green stem of grass, then a bud, then the ripened grain. When the grain is fully formed, he reaps—harvest time!” (Mark 4:26-29, MSG).
I suppose this truly is the heart of our matter.
…Sue…
