Good morning…
“I’m up praying for you and yours,” I texted in the middle of the night. “Any new baby news?” God had stirred me awake to pray for a friend whose grand baby was due any day.
“Good morn!” came her return text at 8:58 am. “She was born yesterday and all went well. I have been taking care of her sister, so I’m just slow getting out this wonderful news. She’s a doll.”
“Congrats!” I wrote right back. “It is awesome God had me up praying for you and your family on your sweet baby’s first night outside of the womb. How incredible this miracle of new life.”
“Her big sis and I watched your blog video of daughter and dad singing ‘You’ve Got A Friend In Me’ and she was mesmerized. We watched several more of their YouTube songs and had a ball.”
This precious pint-sized person is just one thing born during this unusual time in our shared history. What else is being birthed among us during this period of pandemic?
Homemade family dinners. New puppies finding homes. Backyard weddings (with less than ten people). Graveside services with inner circle loved ones (and intimate video footage for friends and family across the country). “With the highways being quieter at night, I have actually been able to hear the owl in our backyard,” said one friend. A slower pace. Generous acts. Sewing machines birthing a multitude of masks. Walks and talks six feet apart. A blurred line between work and home. “Extra inning” hours with college kids at home. Coffee time conversations. Handwritten letters. Long distance phone calls and FaceTime bonding. Zoom meetings and group text strings with silly memes. Handmade signs expressing love outside closed windows. A deeper trust in God’s mysterious ways. Inspirational quotes, songs, videos, and poems like this one I recently received.
From this sacred season in history, what will you remember most?
Oh, how sweet the light of day, And how wonderful to live in the sunshine! Even if you live a long time, don’t take a single day for granted. Take delight in each light-filled hour, remembering that there will also be many dark days and that most of what comes your way is smoke (Ecclesiastes 11:7-8, MSG).
