Good morning…
Last night, I drove seven high school girls and their homemade food to Trinity House, a recovery program for men in downtown Atlanta. Once a month, my husband, who is the high school chaplain, divvies up different items on a menu, various kids volunteer to bring food, and a small group of students shares dinner with the men recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. Last night my husband had another important commitment, so he passed the Trinity House opportunity on to me.
Every time I go to Trinity House, I am impressed by the courageous stories shared by the men around the table, men who are transforming their pain into fresh purpose. Last night, one man said something I have never thought of before. He said something like this, “We humans are the only created beings born with choice. Birds follow God’s design, they flap their wings and they fly. Fish follow God’s design, they wiggle their tails and they swim. Trees follow God’s design, sending roots down deep they grow tall and strong.” He continued, “But humans are given the responsibility of choice. We are the only created beings who can choose to follow or to refuse God’s design. All of us addicts are here because somewhere along the way, we selfishly refused to follow God’s design for our lives. In humble submission to the Creator of all, we are now seeking to choose every day to follow God’s design for our own unique lives.”
