baby-booties

Good morning…

In yesterday’s blog post I uncovered the word summing up for me this unusual semester of learning, “Unfinished.” Unfinished is uncomfortable. Unfinished is unsettling. Unfinished is often unavoidable.

I pressed “send” on our message then hopped in the car and drove to a friend’s to walk and talk before our final class. Back and forth conversation. Mutually beneficial sharing. Sunshine, fresh air, unmasked smiles added another hour of joy to our friendship journey. After returning to her home, we exchanged birthday gifts, since we share the same birthday season, and I excitedly gave her the gift pictured in the photo above.

Handmade baby booties wrapped in a bag covered with “love.” This precious gift felt like the perfect symbol given from my soul. My friend is preparing for her first grand baby in June, and I am diligently holding in loving prayer the development of this unique being. God is still forming the tiny feet which will slip into these booties, on the exact right day, at the exact right time. This baby in the belly is currently unfinished. Unfinished and in process. Unfinished and on her way. Unfinished and in God’s tender loving care.

A baby resting unfinished in a growing belly, teaches me to wait with patience, to wait with hope, to wait upon the timing of God’s mysterious design.

After this baby is born, I envision my friend slipping these booties over two sets of five perfect little toes. Tying them together after they are quickly outgrown, placing them annually on the Christmas tree, these baby booties will capture memory of where a new life began before leaving a unique footprint on this earth.

Inside the womb and outside the womb, God is in charge of our unformed development. We quietly say to the Maker of each life, “Your eyes saw me when I was formless; all my days were written in your book and planned before a single one of them began” (Psalm 139:16, CSB). Tenderly wrapped in the womb of God’s love, may we each gradually grow as the LORD intends.
