Good morning…
Over the phone a friend shared with me a quote she had just happened upon. “When I wake up in the morning,” EB White once said, “I can’t decide whether to enjoy the world or improve the world, that makes it difficult to plan the day.”
My friend went on to think out loud. “I can easily get caught up trying to improve myself, other people, and the world we live in. Then I spend time with my three year old granddaughter and she just enjoys everything with wide-eyed wonder. She has so much to teach me.”
Then I remembered Jesus’ words, “Learn this well: Unless you dramatically change your way of thinking and become teachable, and learn about heaven’s kingdom realm with the wide-eyed wonder of a child, you will never be able to enter in” (Matthew 18:3, TPT).
I have been pondering the quote, my friend’s follow up feelings, and Jesus’ convicting comment. Praying for a teachable spirt, I begin to realize that our daily decision is less difficult than we make it. If we decide to enjoy the world wholeheartedly each and every morning, we will catch glimpses of God gradually improving everything. Adopting the wide-eyed wonder of a child, we enter into heaven’s kingdom realm and we see God making all things new.
He wakes me up morning by morning. He wakes up my ear to listen as a follower (Isaiah 50:4b, NLV).
