Good morning…
I can promise you, 2016 is not going to be the year of my best body. The year of my best body may have occurred in 1984 when, age at twenty-one, I was trying to impress my first real boyfriend. The year of my best body may have been in 1987 when I worked extremely hard to squeeze into my wedding dress of choice. The year of my best body may have been in 1994, when, struggling with the powerlessness of infertility, I got really, really skinny to grab any control I could muster. As a fifty-two year old mother of four, I can promise you, 2016 is not going to be the year of my best body.
2016 may be my best year of listening closely to God. 2016 may be my best year of supporting twenty-one, nineteen, seventeen, and fifteen year old kids. 2016 may be my best year of being a more attentive wife and daughter, a life-giving writer and teacher, and a friend who loves and is loved deeply. I will settle for a “good enough” body in 2016 as I seek to listen closely to God, to mother our growing kids, and to be more attentive as a wife and daughter, a writer-teacher and genuine friend.
How will you fill in this blank? “2016 may be my best year of ………………., of ………………. , and of ………………..” To focus our time and our energy on God’s top priorities, let’s give ourselves permission to allow lesser things to fade to “good enough.”
