Good morning…

“I have been fascinated with your posts about the many tables in our lives,” she wrote. “So many come to mind! Display table. Side table. Thanksgiving table. The list goes on and on.”

She continued: “My daughter, living in Charleston, communicates with me in many different ways as she navigates a new city and her entry into adulthood. One way she bonds with me is by making a Spotify playlist. It’s mostly songs that she likes and wants me to hear and enjoy with her. She adds songs every now and then. As I was walking my dog and listening to my playlist, I heard a new song— “Crowded Table” by Highwomen. I love it.”

She concluded: “I wish I knew how to send it to you. You will love it as we enter this season of thanks and family time.”

Intrigued by her suggestion, I googled the song title and discovered these lyrics.

Crowded Table by Highwomen

You can hold my hand
When you need to let go
I can be your mountain
When you’re feeling valley-low
I can be your streetlight
Showing you the way home
You can hold my hand
When you need to let go
I want a house with a crowded table
And a place by the fire for everyone
Let us take on the world while we’re young and able
And bring us back together when the day is done
If we want a garden
We’re gonna have to sow the seed
Plant a little happiness
Let the roots run deep
If it’s love that we give
Then it’s love that we reap
If we want a garden
We’re gonna have to sow the seed
Yeah I want a house with a crowded table
And a place by the fire for everyone
Let us take on the world while we’re young and able
And bring us back together when the day is done
The door is always open
Your picture’s on my wall
Everyone’s a little broken
And everyone belongs
Yeah, everyone belongs

And so on this day, in whatever city we wake, the love that we sow becomes the love that we reap. Planting belonging with everyone we meet, may our tables be crowded as God’s harvest runs deep.

Remember this: The farmer who plants a few seeds will have a very small harvest. But the farmer who plants because he has received God’s blessings will receive a harvest of God’s blessings in return (2 Corinthians 9:6, GW).
