trash

Good morning…

Trash piles high this time of year. Empty boxes. Used wrapping paper. Unneeded extras of all kinds. Into my own mess of excess, Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer shares a short, thought-provoking poem.

carrying out the trash
this, too,
a holy path

Small. Simple. Stimulating. My mind plays with ideas sparked.

To carry out the trash, one must have an “in,” a home, a space, a place where normal life happens. Some have no home, no space, no place to settle.

To carry out the trash, one must be mobile, physically capable, in good enough health. Some are bedridden, handicapped, unable to carry.

To carry out the trash, one must have surplus, leftovers, scraps to discard. Some go without basic food, necessary supplies, humbled, hungry, helpless.

To carry out the trash, one must live in a community where trash is cared for, picked up, hauled away. Some lack community, care, connection.

God blazes a holy path from my mind to my heart. Might carrying out the trash be my newest form of prayer, a conscious choice to hold every one of us in the healing light of our loving Lord?

“Pay attention, my people. Listen to me, nations. Revelation flows from me. My decisions light up the world. My deliverance arrives on the run, my salvation right on time. I’ll bring justice to the peoples. Even faraway islands will look to me and take hope in my saving power. Look up at the skies, ponder the earth under your feet. The skies will fade out like smoke, the earth will wear out like work pants, and the people will die off like flies. But my salvation will last forever, my setting-things-right will never be obsolete” (Isaiah 51:4-6, MSG).

Let’s pay attention each time we carry out the trash. Revelation flows from God to stimulate our minds and our hearts. Our Re-creator is setting things right, extending the light of lasting salvation through us to the bedridden and the handicapped, the hungry and the helpless, the homeless and the disconnected. God’s decisions light up our world, and we offer eternal hope of saving power.
